Those disclaimer notices don't necessarily have any legal standing, and it's worth pushing the owner of the car wash for compensation even if they do have notices up saying that you're using the thing at your own risk.

Mine was a company car, so it was our accounts department that handled it, but as I recall the garage that owned the car wash did end up paying for the repairs. They should have liability insurance to cover accidents and damage to third-party property, so don't feel too bad about banging in a claim if it's an honest one.

I always unscrew a radio aerial and other dangly bits before going in a car wash. I also set the windscreen wipers to vertical as the brushes are working over the screens. I use the ignition key while leaving the wipers switched on. Same when the brushes get to the back. It's always worked and it puts down an otherwise very boring few minutes. I won't drive a car less than about five years old as it takes that long for the paint to get hard enough so's it does not scour. (Yeah! That IS a bit Oirish but I've a beter excuse than most). I had a 1983 Fiesta in 1998 and you just could not mark it in a carwash. It always came out much better than it went in. Oh! I always try to wash the car when the day is very wet. I can never understand why people go in car washes with a dry car. It's going to get wet anyway. I bet I'm missing something here but I sure's hell can't figure what I'm missing
