Re: Cleaning engine compartment, other detailing
^ I agree solvents and a paint brush. I often use a 50/50 petrol/paraffin mix (no smoking or naked flames!!) and either wipe off with rags, or can follow with a degeasing product and rinse. If really filthy the crud that's washed off can make a helluva mess on the floor tho so yes cover it if it matters!
Milky plastic lenses ~ I read somewhere, but can't remember where, this can be caused by sunlight? UV or something?
Or, or as well as, can be because plastic has been heated too much by the actual lamps ~ I know someone with a modern motorbike with plastic headlight lens, he ran it with the rain cover still over the front of the bike, but because headlight is always on with ignition (no separate switch), the covered plastic lens got too hot and turned white!
Moral: DO NOT SWITCH ON HEADLIGHTS IF COVERED OVER WITH A CLOTH OR CAR COVER OR SIMILAR
