Car Seats - questions

Hi All,

I have seen a Grand Espace that I am thinking of buying, which has the half chamois type leather seats and the top of the backrest and under the knees and the rest cloth. How hard wearing are they? Has anyone any experience?

Also, these particular ones are fairly light in colour. Do they resist stains and are they easily cleanable?

I had part leather in my last Laguna, and I reckon it's the worst of both worlds. You still have the cloth segments that pick up dirt, chocolate stains, baby puke (if applicable) etc. but also have to live with the leather being sticky in hot weather and uncomfortably cold on any bare skin that manages to come into contact with it in cold weather.

At 80K miles and almost 3.5 years old, the leather on the driver's seat was starting to look a little tired, though it certainly wasn't shabby and would probably have been in as new condition with a little TLC. It still had its colour and shape and the surface was unblemished, but it had started to crease more readily than the hide on the other seats.

The other problem with the light part-leather in the Laguna was that it included velour trim up to the window line on the interior door panels. I don't know if this is true of the Espace, but if so, it tends to wear a patch if you rest your elbow on the top of the panel while driving. The full leather model has leather trim up to the window, so shouldn't suffer from the same problem.

The light carpet that goes with it is also prone to staining, though it's only a real problem if you happen to have a can of Coke puncture in the back of the car and spray everywhere, and you don't find out about it until several days later.

Mine has the half leather in light grey and if you lift the three rear head rests in the back you can easily judge how much cleaning to you to do to get things back to normal.

The leather is strong and hard wearing as is the velour stuff.

I use leather cream and upholstery cleaner a couple of times during the summer months and it cleans up very easily.

As for stains I managed to rid the car of puppy poo ( yes she really did not understand why the world was moving whilst her legs stood still ) child puke ( daddy i feel siiiiii blllluuurrrggghh - 80 mph M1 middlelane ) and the aforementioned chocolate.

A set of full Renault carpet mats cost me 40 and protect the carpet very well. Don't bother with the velour halfrauds ones becuase they dont last five minutes..

Thanks L2O

I was feeling a bit ugh, after Horatios post (well meant though) as the rest of the car is the Dogs !!!

The GE is 2 years old and has been looked after. I have 3 kids (16, 13 & 1 ) who do not have the appreciation for a car as perhaps I would. But as long as I can clean it up afterwards then OK (sort of). Plus I have an Ooops franchise near me.

I have a Grand Espace with, I think, the seats you're talking about see pic!

I have a 9 year old and a 3 year old, both boys, both with friends, all who like boy things including MUD, crisps etc etc, particularly when in the car! The seats clean up really well. They seem pretty hard wearing.
