I agree absolutely that learner drivers have to deal with real traffic, but I get the impression that some are having this thrown at them on their first lesson before they've even got the hang of making the car go, stop and go around corners.

Should I put my flameproof suit on now?

I disagree from a learner point of view because i was thrown in at the deep end and made to drive along the East Lancs A580 on my very first lesson, and passed my test first time But maybe more responsibility should be taken by the instructors?

I'd like to think my instructor allowed me to (even though i nearly followed through!) because he thought i was up to it. If someone clearly wasn't up to that level, then by all means stick them on industrial estates until they are!

Fair comment Horatio - I think it about time special areas where set aside for learners - particularly where first-timers can go and practice - any old aerodrome would do - it would allow instructors to also demonstrate various manouvres and maybe also those older to practice or improve.
