recycling charge

Had a service done recently and there was recycling charge for oil and filters. only 6.95 but was wondering we have an oil bin at our local tip so could i refuse to pay that charge and dispose of oil and parts myself? Or as i suspect is this compulsory to make the government a bit more cash?

I expect they charge you to dispose of the waste oil and then sell it on to someone else. Businessmen don't do things for the environment, they do it for the bottom line. The Govt. have tried to create a climate (excuse the pun) of guilt over climate change so that they can sting us for taxes yet they refuse to put levies on goods entering the country from places where pollution is extreme. Businessmen have latched onto this and will charge extra for work considered beneficial to the climate when the real beneficiary is their pocket. If you take your oil and filters to dispose of them yourself, they will just charge extra for anything else they do.
