I don't really begrudge spending money on older cars. I spent 200 having both driveshafts done on my 205 shortly after I got it (if that sounds cheap, it's because I got two for the price of one because my most brilliant local garage realised that they had done the wrong one when the clunk remained and that they would do the other for free!)

I'm going to try and do more maintenance myself on the Lag, though it seems like I've bought the worst car for self-maintaining

Frankly, I figure that I could have spent just as much having a 4-5 year old car fixed as a 10-15 year old one, so if the rest of the car's sound, I don't think it's nonsensical to spend almost as much as a car's worth fixing it, especially once you take into account the time and hassle involved in getting rid of a vehicle that's an MOT failure or suffering some other major mechanical fault, be it scrapping or trying to find somebody to buy it for spares/repair. This is especially true for somebody like me who has nowhere to keep a broken car off the road and thus can only have one vehicle at a time due to insurance/tax constraints.

Yep I'd agree on that - a mate of mine has an Audi A4 that usually costs him around 400 for a service. He hasn't disclosed the actual amount but he's just had a four-figure bill for it for something he's being a bit vague about it. The cars only 3 years old too.

Six months bought for 3000 and spemt 2800 on repairs could have afforded the mercedes i hung my nose over

Do you know of any low priced eastern european mechanics who do repairs on Renaults at below the minimum wage i might break even then.

This is possibly why the French are building another immigrant camp near calais!

Smile 2002 Espace running costs

Before I bought my used 02.2002 espace in July 2005 I read some articles on the internet by dissatified espace owners and prepared myself for a car with worse reliability than my previous vehicle, an Isuzu.
2 1/2 years later and with 38,00 miles on the clock Im surprised that this is actually a cheap car to run.
All servicing I've done myself, Ive paid 10 to see if there were any fault codes( there were none)
Rear brake discs rusted quickly and needed replaced after just 40,000 miles ( (120 for pads and disks )
however that is probably my driving style as my previous vehicle was the same.
Plus I forked out 200 to get the auto trans fluid replaced in 2006, allthough it was not due, better safe than sorry.
Currently in jack daniels's garage:
