Thought I'd try starting a pole:

How much have you spent on your Renault this year. I would'nt include servicable items e.g. tyres, exhaust, oil changes etc.

I have spent aprox £800 - acquired the car in March.

Servicing

I have spent about £1000, got the car a month or so ago.

It needed a 72,000 mile service, which is expensive anyway, and the cam & accessory belts needed to be changed at the same time. The offside tracking rod end has excessive play and so I had that fixed too.

My Cabasse dash multi changer also packed up (couldn't load CDs) and so I got one off ebay for £100. Dealer said they would charge £591 for the same unit. Oh I laughed.

I dropped my key card on the floor and that broke the micro switches. I sent my key off to Gary @ Renault Laguna Key Card Repair Keycard to have it fixed for £20 plus postage. He did a really good job, and saved me some money.

I repaired the lighting on the climate control unit myself. Cost £2 for some solder (already had the iron).

Also got a new alloy wheel cap (56mm wide one) and a new plastic tyre valve cover together for £10.

I'm not sure I should be saying this, but it has cost me very little so far......and if that isn't tempting fate I don't know what is!.:d

I can't think of anything that has cost me money that wasn't a wear and tear item.I bought the car in March this year(I think:eek:) for £1300,replaced the front tyres as the car had remoulds fitted to it(205/55VR16 Avon Milleniums,£25 each trade),and replaced the front discs and pads as the previous owner had put new pads on it but the discs were warped(around £100 trade).Apart from that it's had the odd bulb,an oil and filter change, pollen filter change,a bolt in the seat base replaced, and one pencil coil and a set of plugs.I also had the aircon professionally re-gassed for £25.:)

I don't think that thats bad for a car thats done 130k.::).It's due a cambelt next year, and the exhaust is getting a bit weak in a few places, and the radiator has a tiny weap from it which is bound to get worse, but all in all I am very, very pleased with it.:)

Only £30 on an oil and filter, its now on 37k and 03 plate.

However a lot has been saved through being brave enough to do jobs myself, e.g strip the window mechanisms down and lube, clean the egr, climate control repair, and its now needing both rear bushes, track rod ends, and anti roll bar links, which i'll be doing myself.

Thought I'd give a breakdown of the £800 pounds I spent on the espace:

Air con not working - £200 corroded connection to the compressor (guess I could have saved a lot if I had diagnosed and fixed this myself)

Engine mount dogbone £57 - did fit this myself

Track rod - worn ball joint £160

***Gearbox diff seal and oil change £240

***Idler pulley (chunk missing) and aux belt £120

I guess I could have saved by doing more jobs myself, but still would not attempt these ***

Plus few other minor items

Other than that - servicable:

Oil change

And other jobs that did'nt cost me:

Sorted out a boot leak - replaced rear high level brake light

Refitted passenger door trims (think they were not put on properly after windows being tinted)

Rear alarm sensor missing - soldered on a new one.

Looking back could of got away with leaving most of this apart from boot leak and air conditioning not working in terms of very necessary.

However in tems of precaution would'nt have liked to leave the pully tensioner or gearbox diff seal.

One question this pole may answer:

Would taking out Warranty pay for itself - in my case if all the items I have listed would be covered by it then yes.

Only (hah!) spent £250 (including VAT :steam:) so far despite not having had the car that long:

  • £120 for a cam-belt change. Car still had its original at 62k when I bought it, but after reading numerous posts on here I figured it safer to dump the cash and have it replaced.
  • £50 to have my power steering flushed out 'cos I'm an idiot :)
  • Assorted other bits and pieces to address niggly things (handbrake adjustment etc.)

Oh, and I splashed the princely sum of £3 on a blind-spot mirror - best three quid I've spent in a long, long time.

Next up is a set of front fogs, ideally before the years end - fortunately the car is taxed 'til March and the MOT isn't due until May, by which time I might have had a pay rise :d

Laguna approx £150 - 36k service @Renault Independant
Megane approx £150 - 9k service @Renault Main dealer( had 25% discount off 1st service as bought car there).

Laguna is now 3 1/2 yrs old approx 48k on clock - never spent a penny on it apart from routine stuff, only warranty fault was a drivers side window regulator.

Megane is now 16mths old, approx 8k on clock - not a single warranty problem.

AndrewM,

Just dug out the receipt. Sad. So much time on my hands - you would,nt think I've been to work this morning, replumbed a bathroom - including knocking crap out of the walls - this afternoon and entertained kids in between.

Anyway the receipt said n/s/f track rod end £38 and £95 labour - then add VAT - yes I have gor money to throw away - can't get rid of it quick enough.

I think at the time Renault had done me a few favours investigating and checking things for nothing - so decided to let them do this one - also included tracking - which I had to get done twice as first time steering wheel was not straight.

Chris,

Seems to be a common theme - Supporters - practically not spent any thing on their cars, maybe just a coincidence.

All I can say is I am pleased for you all - I am honest!

On a serious not this forum does help in a lot of cases to keep the cost down.

Cheers

I bought my Laguna II 2001 in May for £1000+£70indemity from an auction.
I have spent about £200 on head rebuild including new valves, cambelt kit, £50 new window regulator. £100 oil plugs filters etc. It needs another window regulator and may need a clutch soon.
All work done myself.
I started using it in October & have done 2000miles so far with no problems or costs.

I never like answering this type of question.

Owned the car since August last year.

Other than routine servicing & tyres, the only expenditure over the 30,000 miles I've since put on it was a 3-year warranty (£400), and a battery/electrical short repair (£160).

Long may that be the case.

Paul:)

I answered the Poll before fully thinking. I bought the car for £4450 in June, paid £1152 for insurance from NUD (9 months Rapid Bonus), £90 for a CD Changer (fitted), £40 for a OBD check and underseat airbag wiring fix, £20 for a fitted replacement hazard switch.

...And the currently ongoing (Not at Fault!) claim for some spanner reversing into my Car in the college carpak which should *touch wood* come to nothing except me getting a new headlight and shiny front bumper :d

So in total, about £5750 :p
