Thought I'd try starting a pole:

How much have you spent on your Renault this year. I would'nt include servicable items e.g. tyres, exhaust, oil changes etc.

I have spent aprox £800 - acquired the car in March.

I've only had my second hand 03 Scenic 6 weeks and its cost me over £400 already. Had it two weeks and the rear passenger side shock absorber went. The person I bought it from did say i would get 6 months out of the tyres ...but not on the mileage I do, the front ones were nearly illegal when I checked them at the weekend, just got two new front ones and also new rear disc brakes and pads. That in total was just under £400. Just got other consumables for winter like winter strength screenwash and winter coolant. By the way its not that easy to check how much is in your screenwash is it?! My last car you could see it easily. All you can see is the yellow lid for it in my Scenic, its the most akward place as well, in the corner!

I'm hoping with the tyres and brakes done then that will do it through the winter and touch wood nothing else needs done.

Thats definitely cost you a few quid if you've had all that done. I was lucky that the guy who sold me the car fitted a new cambelt/pulleys on it and new front discs before i took ownership otherwise I'd have had to spend even more. I am still annoyed though as it passed its MOT at the start of October and I've had to do the rear discs. I checked the advisory notice which said the disc were slightly pitted, well they were alot more than that!!

I discovered a link to the dvla website where you can check your cars MOT history and any advisory notices. Interesting reading for my car, mostly brake related!! All you need is your reg number and last MOT test number or number off your V5 document, if you don't have these you cannot access the details.

With regard to these comments even the trade can get caught and I repeat that too many people see full history as the bible to car buying,it is not.
I had a citroen ax recently 93 only 40k odd from new, rang previous owner and guess what--not had cambelt, easy job on it though but sold it on with that and the usual french sticking callipers.Have this laguna now rang previous owner had it for 9 years/tears
and, guess what again--no cambelt done! the clutch is high and on 130k but still no slip so just run it. Ive looked at belt seems ok so take a chance. The upshot is sometimes the maint hist cannot be got.And its how it is on the day of test/inspection that matters nothing else.

Yes on the MOT front it is all about opinions, that is one person will look at an item and fail it however, put another person on the job and they will pass it, its a bit like some roofers one is in the lap of the gods.
As for advisory well, again its that persons advice and it looks good for the record keepers.
If you were to sell the car soon no matter but, if you keep then best look yourself then decide.

It's funny really NOT!!

I hung on to the Lag2 for a frazzle over 3 years I took it to a local Auto Centre for it first MOT 1 week before the warranty expired, although they didn't know that. The guy failed saying the rear rubber bushes had gone time expired.

They actually went through the procedure of giving me the fail certificate also a quote of £300+ for the work on the rubber bushes to be completed.

At this stage I made them aware that the car was still within the Renault warranty and I was now going directly to Renault to give them a good
b:censored:ing on the basis that the rear rubber bushes had failed the very first MOT. The guy without any warning snatched the MOT failure notice back, he disappeared for a while then came back giving me a pass certificate with an advisory about the rubber bushes, robbing :censored:

BTW Renault replaced the rubber bushes FOC and also proved conclusively that they would have done the MOT but cheaper than the Auto Centre

Renault said the one had just started to break away but they wouldn't have failed it at that stage as it was no major problem, the other was OK.

But Renault also said because they were aware of the rear bush issue they would have replaced them FOC even 12 months later, 1 year past the normal warranty period.

Buy in haste repent at leisure,if you are not familiar with the product you are thinking of buying take someone who is or, ask if they know someone,if not, pay a "Pro" you could save a lot more than it may cost ( I do not know if you just bought it)

£190 on a new track rod end, de-seizing of the rear brake balancing thingumy, welding a plate over the massive gash in my N/S sill (with which it passed the last MOT by a different tester ), some oil and the MOT itself.

Not too bad for another year on the road, but it needs a new glowplug, I'll probably replace the lot, but I'm terrified of them breaking off when I try and remove them.

That would indeed be a lot of money for a track rod end alone, however, if you'd followed the sentence to it's terminus (i.e. the full stop) you would notice it was only the first item in a list. :d

wow....but I had noticed ebay are often charging more than you can get genuine parts through a club for.

Dealer Clio Diesel Fuel filter ~£70
Ebay (turned out to be none genuine) £30 + delivery
Club Genuine £15 + delivery

Ok you have to join but they may give you a quote before you do.

Purchased car in May. 1.5dci Clio

Bottom wishbone - £30

Abs reluctor ring (common clio fault)- £12 (Could have been a new driveshaft if it wasnt for a genius on ebay!!)

Immobiliser fault (common clio fault)- £110

Horn Fixed (common clio fault)- £50

Labour - £120

Total £332 (not including serviceable parts this year inc a timing belt lol )

Not exactly a year, but purchased car in September. 99 T Clio Alize.

So far, roughly £170.

Oil filter due to oil leak (which didn't actually solve it, it still leaks now and again so it must be something else), £15 to buy and £10 to fit by a friend who is a mechanic.

Idle Control Valve due to cutting out, £70 to buy, again my friend fitted this, which I paid him £20 for as it was a bigger job with some difficulty getting it on.

Light bulbs, when I bought it only one reverse light worked (for a few weeks I never realised, as I thought Clios only had one reverse light as with some other small cars, it wasn't until seeing a friends Clio that's the same as mine that I realised that they have two). Also a fog light bulb was out. I bought a set of bulbs for £3 and keep some in the car in case one goes.

Mileage & trip backlight, this failed, so a new bulb from Renault was £5, due to a local car parts company not having any. Got instructions from members on how to fit it but havent got round to it.

And finally the rear section of the exhaust, this broke (I suspect after driving over rough ground), causing a replacement of the rear section.

In answering the question though, as for 2010 nothing has been spent so far (touch wood).

Old thread but since it popped up n my user cp...

Not a Renault of course but anyway over the last 12 months...

Cambelt, waterpump, fuel and brake lines repaced about £300
Oil/air filters, sparky plugs and leads (which were £30 alone!) mini service stuff £80
Lambda sensor £20
Coolant temp sensor £5
Hand brake cable £60

Keeping the old girl going ain't expensive, putting the petrol in is what hurts the wallet

My Lag had its 2nd MOT in my ownership last week.

Since its last MOT I have bought two rear tyres (part worn Bridgestones) - £25 each

MOT last week - £190 for new rear pads and both front track rod ends, all supplied and fitted.

So - total £240 on parts and labour in 12 months.

Total distance covered in this time - 20,225 miles.
