Exclamation 2005 Grand Scenic Fire

I am trying to understand the reason my 2005 Renault Grand Scenic caught fire whilst parked up on a "nice" residential street in Brighton, in the early hours of yesterday moning.

To my untrained eye it started in the engine bay and burned so hot that it melted the radiator, embeding it in the road surface as well as melting the rear lights and the bumper of the car that was parked in front of it.
Not alot left of the contents either.

I've talked to Renault UK who tell me this is new to them and as the car was parked with the ignition off and having not been driven for 10 hours, it did not make sense. Older 2000-2001 scenic models had a side mirror electrical fault
he said but not one built in 2005 with only 22000 on the clock.

I am to contacted by a member of their fire investigation team on wednesday 2nd January, I would like to be able to tell them something helpful to help other newer build Scenic owners

I am grateful for any imput

I have not heard of any fire problems with the newer Scenics personally.

What engine was fitted to your Scenic II ?

Keep us updated on this Sandy .

Wasn't there some posting about door mirror motors causing fires - or was that on the older models?

Hi there, sorry to hear of this.

My instinct would make me think of the starter motor self-engaging and just burning itself out.

Did you park leaving the car in gear? If so, then I'm in the wrong area.

Hopefully this is a one-off and resolved quickly.

Thankfully no injuries.

This job should never be complete - the day I think I've done it all, is the day I resign.
