What would you do, keep or change?

I have a 2002 Diesel clio with 120,000 miles. the car runs fine and gives me 67 mpg on the 100 mile round trip to work each day.

I realize that the car isnt worth much and that if anything major goes wrong then the car may not be worth repairing, the trouble is that I would need to get it repaired to sell it.

Last years May Mot for nearly 700 which included discs and had I known it was going to be so much then i would have changed the car beforehand.

The trouble is that the car s ideal for me and is cheap to run, what would you do, change the car now and get around 2000 as a part ex or keep it until it goes bang?

If it's worth 2000 now then lets say it will be worth around 75% of that in a year, so that's around 1500, or a 500 loss.
And let's say you have another expensive MOT at 600.
So your running for the year is 500 plus 600 = 1100.

Assuming you would buy a fairly new replacement (at 6000) it would depreciate at 1500 or so in the first year and would need some sort of maintenance/tyres/brakes etc at say 200.
Total for the newer car for the year would be 1700.

Thats more than 50% more expensive.

I'd keep the existing car for another year and then do similar sums again next year. Unless it starts to break down all the time or you want a change.

I'm with mister_cee on this (though not for the maths side as I have no idea of depreciation values).

If the car is reliable, cheap to run and has such a high mpg then I personally would keep it.

Any car is going to need expensive maintenance unfortunately at some time in it's life. Thats all cars are - expensive.

What you really need to ask yourself is this: Do YOU want another car or do you want to keep your current one?

When you work out the answer to that, you've solved it yourself

On that note I'll add that we got a 1997 1.6 Megane. The head gasket has blown itself away and to get it done would cost arount 600. So, we've stuck it in the rear car park behind our house. Until we can get a replacement engine it's serving as a rather nice tool shed on wheels (It still moves in 1st gear) but we're not letting it go. IT needs various expensive things doing to it but it cost us just 80 to keep when the insurance company wrote it off. For 80 you couldn't even buy the chassis, shell and interior so 175 for another engine and a few bits of maintenance is peanuts really when you think about it.
