Not an expert, but we used to have a Punto - they have electric power steering, so sounds like you need to look for a bad connection.

The first thing that popped into my head was the PAS pump - obvious, I know! Does it make any noises when he uses it? The PAS pump was failing on my Dad's Vectra not long ago and it was noisy (groaning motor type of noise) when turning and it was louder on full lock. Has he knocked the steering hard on a kerb or such? It was doing that that caused my Dad's to go.

Could also be wiring that has come loose or nicked by something.

The amber light is norm when using the City feature but flashing indicates a problem.

Hi mate,

The PAS on the mk2b punto is electronic, and therefore had no pump as such. Its a very common failing point on the punto. When the city button is pressed, a green light saying City should come on...does it come on? IS there a red light on that looks like a steering wheel?

The orange light sounds like it may be the EOBD light...does it look like an engine?

The power steerng may be a the motor or torque sensors, or possibly even the PAS ECU , in which case you will need a whole new column as its built into it. That will come in at around 600.

The link provided above to the fiat forum will help you out. If you go to the punto section and there is lots of information on PAS failure.

Hope that helps,
