When the battery went in the remote on our mk1 laguna the key lost contact with the car and had to be recoded to it. the symptoms were as you describe for yours.

It might be that the car battery itself is flat. When the car battery goes flat the immobiliser clears itself. When you try to start the car it won't work.

Test this theory by turning on the lights. If the lights are dim then the battery's flat. If this is the problem you first need to recharge the battery. When this is done have an auto electrician (you can find one in the yellow pages) come and reset your immobiliser.

When this happened to me in a previous car I had the RAC come out to give the battery a boost and then the auto electrician out to reset the immobiliser. Don't get the electrician out first because if the battery is flat the immobiliser will clear again and you'll have to get the electrician back out again, at extra cost.

Try to make sure the battery is flat before going through this because the elctrician will charge you about 40. Hope this helps.

I've had the same problem with the key. Wife explained that it would take up to 10 times to press the button to lock/unlock the car. Very intermittent operation.

I checked the battery - it was OK. Red LED would light up OK when the button was pressed.

When I opened the key, I found that the IR LED had one leg that was broken away from the PCB (it's the black LED, which sends the infra-red message to the receiver). Obviously there's enough slight movement every time you press the button that after 1000 presses or so the solder cracks. It was easily fixed with a soldering iron. I presume that it would have cost me >100 if I'd asked the dealer to fix the problem. They don't repair, they just replace
