We did the tyre pressures at the weekend and they were well out so maybe that might help a little. Also getting it tuned next week as there is a slight hiccup when it's ticking over so it's not 100% right.

Interestingly enough I got stuck behind the SLLLLOOOWW drivers this morning and I averaged 31MPH over the 20+ mile journey. I revved it high a few times to overtake quickly (windy roads!) and was surprised to see my MPG was 28.6!

Can I improve my MPG from max of 33??? on my Scenic 1.9D D4X

I bought an 02 plate 4 wheel drive drive Scenic 1.9D about a month ago. I have done roughly 250 miles today about 50% on the motorway 25% country roads and 25% Town/City roads and it has only averaged 31.5mpg according to the computer.
I have to admit that has disappointed me as its used roughly 35 of Diesel to run from Chesterfield to Liverpool and then to East Mids airport and back to and from Chesterfield. No I am not a Taxi driver, Its all family stuff, lol
The car has got 91,000 miles on it and I am an average driver that goes roughly the speed limits and nothing daft over or below it!!
Can you give me any advice as to whether I should stop moaning about my MPG or whether something could be having a knock on effect to my low mpg???

Also I have noticed a few times first thing in the morning mainly when I change into 2nd gear for the first time it seems to lose its power and takes a couple of seconds to regain it, any thoughts or experience of this???

Apart from these 2 things I love my new car!!!

Hello and welcome to the forum.

You can't rely 100% on the computer read out I'm afraid,I'd try the more accurate method of brimming the car, using it for a set distance, then briming it again. You can note the amount of litres you've used, then convert it into gallons, then divide the miles by the gallons and you'll get an accurate figure. If you do this over a decent mileage and repeat it a couple of times you'll get a better picture of your cars fuel consumption.

I would have thought that your 31.5 is a little low and you could expect something around 40,but a lot depends on how you drive it to be honest.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....

Plus of course, your car has the additional weight of the 4wd system and the increased rolling resistance of the tyres taking its toll.

As previously said, calculate it out manually, and that way you have a firm basis to compare with other owners.

I'm not sure as its a 4x4 but could your loss of power be clutch slip? It might be an idea to check the clutch - rolling at 30mph in 5th or something and floor it. If the clutch is slipping the revs will shoot up. If not then it could be the 4x4 diff but you'd have to ask someone more expert than myself

Re the mpg, there are some basics you can check. I'm guessing yours is the 99-03 model, which had the dci engine? If so Parkers has your mpg at about 38.

So yours would be a bit low for all motorway at 50. You might want to confirm you can get the higher level without averaging in the town driving? As 38 is combined it would suggest 40 something is possible on the mway.

Otherwise, what is the condition of your oil and filters? Plus bear in mind cold weather can reduce mpg. I also found a low AC system that needs a regas can further reduce mpg.

Otherwise gearbox and I'm guessing diff oil could contribute to more resistance in running.
