Renault Scenic 1 - Buying Advice

Hi all, just joined and really love the site..
Wondered if I could pick all of your brains... I am almost 100% certain I will be buying my wife a 99t Renault Megane E RT alize Scenic which is just about to hit 1ook miles. I know the owner through work and know his wife has used it and so I know he wouldnt sell me a "dud". The questions are:

What in general are the things to look for?
What will I be looking to pay for a new clutch and cambelt?

I would really appreciate your help, car is up for 1000 by the way (but I will haggle)
Many thanks

A grand for a T-plate Scenic is pretty good value,so even if you do have to spend a few quid on it the car is more than worth it.

If you could post details of what engine it has, then we can advise of costs of cambelts and clutches.

Also, look at the Scenic Knowledge Base section for common faults.Snapped rear shocks and interior water leaks seem to be amongst the favorites, but in general the Scenic is a very good car.

I'll bet its a 1.6? If it's a ph1 Scenic then it'll be the 1.6 8v engine, same as in my car. Not bad little engines in them but there is one big problem - frailty of the cylinder head gasket. From time to time eBay is littered with Meganes and Scenics with HG failure. If the cars got to 100K so far then I'm pretty sure it'll be fine!

I agree with Lag, 1000 is great value for money, and the Alize spec is pretty nice having aircon etc.

I don't know what likely timing belt and clutch costs are - I assume the Scenic is slightly different to the Megane due to differences in access.

The Vauxhall Cavalier - one of the safest cars you'll bump into

I think the 99 model was the facelift. Bigger headlights, and the 1.6 engine became the 16V.

Check on the clutch. At 100K it's either fairly new, or will be close to end of life. And if it needs changing, it's an engine-out job (expensive).

1000 does sound good though, if it is in good condition and has a reasonable service history.
