It alawys amazed me that the old Megane was one of the best in class for safety - indeed, even the Laguna 1, which was designed before they really thought much about safety had some features, like seatbelt load limiters that it's contemporaries didn't, and performed accordingly better in NCAP testing than many cars of the era.
The BMW 3-series result always shocked me; the equally dire Xantia less so. I'm suprised the 406 didn't perform better too, as that was designed toward the end of the 90s.
