Hi everyone.

Im carl, im 16 and im from northern ireland.

I have seen a nice megane coupe and fancy it for my first car.

It is a black 2000 megane coupe 1.6 16v sport alize. it has covered 65000 miles and is mot'd until september. The guy has i advertised on auto trader for 1900, but i got it for 1650 after a bit of haggling over the fone last nite.

I know the insurance may be steep but i can get it for 1524 through quinn direct.

Now i just wanted to ask what commonly goes wrong on these cars and what should i look out for when viewing as i havent been to see it yet and i dont know alot about renaults?

Also am i paying a good price?

Your replies and advice will be greatly appreciated.

The usual suspects are the ignition coils . If it is fitted with the pencil type.

Hi Carl - have you any idea what the insurance is going to cost when you past your test. (What premium is available now may not be available when the time comes) Is the price of insurance quoted - as a learner?
Meanwhile whilst waiting to past your test the car will be depreciating in value. I come from Northern Ireland and in my experience the Coupe tend to be owned by boy racers and it is likely to have had a hard life - especially if it has been lowered, etc.
One bit of advice I can give you to never-ever agree a price before going to view.
In Northern Ireland Renaults always tend to fetch much less than book price - thats my experience. If its the one I think it is I reckon its worth around 1300 to 1500

Your Megane is a group 8 car... My first car was group 6 and cost 700 to insure TPFT with Direct Line. With two years' experience and NCB, I'm now paying 550 for a group 9 car - generally with cars over about 5 years old, the IG is pretty much the main thing defining the cost of insurance for somebody in a given age group (though obviously there are other factors.)

According to Parker's, the following valuation applies to your car with average milage:
Original Price 14,300 Independent Dealer 2,680 Private Good 2,320 Private Poor 1,560 Part Exchange 1,940

So it looks like you got a reasonable deal on it. Brace yourself however, because if it's anything like the mainland, your insurance will probably be at least as much as the car cost you for the first year for such a high-grouped car! If you want to pay in instalments, the cheapest policy is not necessarily the cheapest, since there's also the interest to consider (effectively, the insurer 'loans' you the money for the year's policy, so they charge a fortune for the finance.) Putting a parent or somebody else with driving experience as a named driver on the policy will most likely reduce the premium substantially, but don't expect it to be 'cheap'.

That insurance price is with a full uk driving license.

If i was to insure it on my provisional license it would cost around the 900 mark, if i remember rite.

Also the car is completely as it left the factory, with the original CD player etc and i needed it to get into my price range before i went any further which is why i needed to get the price down first on the fone - i will negotiate further if it is not up to scratch.

I did get a quote for a 1999 1.6e coupe and it came in at 1300 with a full uk license. The car itself was priced at 950 and had a full leather interior, 66000 miles (which i dont believe for a minute...but the price is, was metallic blue and a pre-facelift with two owners, the second from 2004. Sounds quite good? What do you think?

Also how can you tell if the ignition coil is going then?
