What van

Hi I'm new here looking to buy a Renault Trafic against the advise of my local garage but I have 3500 ish to buy a van want air con electric mirrors / windows did have a 2006 Vito could not get on with it seems the trafic/primastar/Vivaro have a lot more luxury the problem I have is that my mechanic hates them says they are money pits problems with nearly everything but to me every van has problems so do I buy the 1.9 or the 2.0 model heard they both have gearbox issues and that the 2.0 has bad problem with getting the injectors out to the point that it costs more than the van is normally worth so I want some real straight honesty I now this is a renault forum but are these van s really that bad and what one to buy thank you for taking the time to read this long thread just don't want to throw away my hard earned cash

Yes the Trafic is not without it's problems and I would tend to agree with your mechanic. One of the biggest downfalls is that Renault use a different protocol in their ECU 's and as far as I know only two are truely compatible so in effect that hampers many garages in diagnosing problems. In reality vans are meant to be a workhorse for business so every hour in dock means less profit for the owner or driver. Don't be swayed by bells and whistles and creature conforts - stick with reliabilty and running costs as your main criteria.

Re: What van

I purchased a 2009 2.0 back in November 2013 cost me 10,250 since then i have spent a further 3500 the biggest expense was the Quickshift gearbox failure.
The injectors issue was featured on Watchdog & relates to the windscreen / scuttle area dumping water onto the injector area & rusting them in. There are a limited number of Trafic II vans equipped with the 2.0-litre dCi diesel engine (M9R) which can be affected by this issue. These vehicles were built between August 2006 and January 2010. Renault have put their hands up to this & will check the van for free as long as it's less than 7 years old or 248,000 miles - If this issue has caused the injectors to fail then, through the franchised Renault dealer network, they will support customers who are outside the warranty period with a significant goodwill contribution.
I like my van, it's got everything i need, just wish it didn't cost so much.
Keep us informed as to your decision.

Re: What van

I'm not a fan of the Trafic/Primastar/Vivaro vans either, they have a number of expensive common faults and personally I wouldn't have one.

Gearbox problems aren't uncommon, and I'd avoid the quick-shift at all costs.Injectors can seize in both the 1.9 and 2.0 dCi units, and injector failures aren't uncommon.Rear brake calipers seize for a past time, strut bearings and bottom joints are made of cheese, general running faults due to failed sensors/ EGR valves/high pressure diesel faults are common......and due to the design of the engine bay many jobs that should be straight forward are a right royal pain in the ar$e!.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....

Re: What van

I did nearly 200k in my old Trafic -original clutch, injectors and gearbox. But it was well looked after serviced on the dot ,good fuel used etc.ALL vans have problems-its just some mechanics dont like Renaults probably because they just dont understand them!
