On distance journeys, my 2.2 litre diesel Laguna is comprehensively much cheaper to run than my old 205 1.1 petrol, especially impressive in light of the fact that the Laguna Estate weighs 2/3 more than a 205 hatch! I know neither is the sterling example of fuel efficiency due to old fashioned engines, and it probably didn't help that the 205 was geared quite so low... However, even round town, I haven't noticed a huge difference in running costs (I haven't tested round town driving per se, but I seem to be spending roughly the same amount of fuel for the same distance travelled so far.)
Plus, a DERV with all it's torque is so much nicer to drive, especially in stop/start traffic and uphill!
