Petrol Auto box - Safe Mode

newbie here and 1st post

Naturally, I am in trouble and need some assitance from peeps in the know on how to deal with a disappointing fault to a car I really do like.

I have a Scenic 2.0 petrol Prestige old shape that has a problem.

As you drive, it shunts and drops down a gear - I think the handbook suggests it is in safe mode. If you stop and shut the engine down and re-start, it will reset itself andf as the things warm up, she then runs fine.
It has become progrressively more frequent (going into safe mode) - especially when the engine is 1st started for the day and especially when it has been cold overnight.

I have taken it to a local dealer (not a Main dealer but they "specialise" in Renault) who said it would either be a faulty sensor or a new box.

Bit ¤¤¤¤ed off here as the car was owned by a retired couple, is in excellent nick, all the paperwork and well below average mileage but ar 63K it seems the box is FUBAR'd?

Naturally, I was told it was a new box (at £1700+VAT thank you very much) but "others'' have told me it is likely to be a sensor or the electronics messing about.

This leads to two Q's -

1. How do I really determine if it is a new box as described by the garage (I have no reason to doubt them) or if it is the sensor or some other electronic malady and

2. If I do need a new box, I do not want to spend £1700 + VAT on a car that now sits on my drive (as I have a company car at the moment) So where is the best place to get one.

A freind has a trusted mechanic who can do the work ( he specialises in 4x4's and is used to complex drives and gearboxes. However, he relayed to me via a friend that there are 2 parts to a gearbox - one of which is to do with synchronisation and the gearbox should have the original part attached. I think the thrust of the argument was that regenned gearboxes often have non matched parts added to them causing future problems.

I dont really want to ditch the car - its only worth £3500 so to do this work for 2/3rds of the value seems pointless.

Any ideas on how to check what is the fault (2nd opinion really) and how to fix it via 2nd hand parts and a friendly mechanic

I did a search under Auto Boxes but nothing sprang out at me re this particular problem.

The garage seemed to be expecting the gearbox to go on the auto which seems to suggest this is a know problem with the renault or perhaps more specifically with the scenic auto

Thanks in advance

Hi and welcome to the forum,to be honest i would not be doing anything hasty, what i would do is have it checked at your local stealer most charge about £50-75 to run a diagnostic test and if the ecu has logged the safe mode error then this should show up on the diagnostic machine and give them a code then relating to what the problem is,it could well be something simple like low oil level or a sensor????sometimes just a simple reset can help,i wish i could help more all the best Donald

Renault auto boxes are not the best and 60k is not uncommon to need replaced !

The main problem as far as i can see from previous cars i have had/worked on is the lack of oil changes

this leads to sticking worn parts in the box leading to failure

I stripped an espace v6 with a failed auto box 92 thousand miles on it drained the oil it looked like it had never been changed !!

I had an older espace auto i used it for towing a car trailer up and down to england done at least 30 thousand miles with it changed oil twice in that time box still worked perfectly when car was scrapped total miles were 190 thousand !!

OK.......the garage did a diagnostics and charged me for it. But they forgot what the codes were but reset them so that when I came back in they would re-check and see what codes appeared.

However, the comment was that the box was on its way out and needed a replacement.

I am assuming I am heading for a replacement so where can one go to source 2nd hand to get her running again.

If the gearbox goes every 60k, I dont consider that to be an acceptable level of engineering.

As for oil changes, they should have been done. it was done by a renault main dealer and one by another garage who also confirmed they did the cam belt too.

I think I need a reliable source for 2nd hand boxes as I am going to part company with this car which is actually disappointing.

Who do I need to speak to here ? ANy assistance gratefully received.
