Right place, wrong time

Have just been to the scrapyard in search of a replacement thermostat housing, and anything else of that might come in handy 'in future'. To be honest the 1.6e that's in there is pretty much stripped now, bar the engine itself.

As I walked into the yard a truck carrying a rather dented P reg Megane 1.6e saloon was just driving out. As you'll appreciate, it doesn't take much to write off a 10-11 year old Renault: basically the rear O/S door and around the wheel arch had been knocked in.

Transpires that the scrapyard people had decided they didn't have room for the Megane, so it was going off to the crusher without being unloaded first. I think the real reason was that it was a bloody hot Friday lunchtime and everyone was either in the pub next door, or about to go there.

If I'd been five minutes earlier it would have been mine, all mine...

What a shame, as you said it doesn't take much for an insurance company to write off a motor these days.

You or I could've repaired that megane for next to nothing with 2nd hand parts and got a tidy motor out of it..... or just a nice wedge in your back pocket!

When you factor in labour costs and the price of new parts it often comes to more that the bottom book price of a car. Hey they'd prob write off my 52 plate Lagy with the same damage as depreciation has hit hard on these cars. there is a 51 plate 1.9 dci dynamique with 98k going by me for 2495!! been there a while too so you could prob knock them down a few hundred quid. Shame I don't want another lol!!
