It's a little more complicated that that Pat. If you are under 21 then it is CBT, theory test and practical test for a full Cat A. You are then restricted to 46.6 bhp (35kW) for two years.
If you are going to be 21 before the end of the qualifying period then you can use the accelerated access scheme to take a further test and have immediate access to all motorcycles.
Because I am over 21 (only just
) I can follow the direct access route which is CBT, theory and practical to get full Cat A with no restrictions.
There is also Cat A1 for light motorcycles which is just CBT and practical if you want to ride a 125 without L plates.
