Considered a motorbike?

Of course motorcyclists make the only really competant drivers of 4wheel vehicles. Getting a motorbike licence should be a pre-requesite of obtaining a car or other vehicle licence. (then again I'm very biased) .
Seriously, taking the bad habits absorbed as a car driver, onto two wheels will quickly get you killed as a biker ,wheras taking the lessons learned as a biker will tend to make you live longer as a car driver!

I've gone the other way and given up bikes.

Dealt with too many fatal accidents at work involving bikers, and when the wifes best mates husband got killed on one recently my bike went.

I've got two kids who aren't yet at school, so as much fun as biking is I've decided that the risk is too high for me.

People who think they know what they're doing are especially annoying to those of us who do.

Sorry (but not really surprised) to hear about the fatality aspect.

That's the reason I'm such a late adopter, I always preferred the inherent safety factor that a car will provide.

I'm in a similar position (2 kids; 1 under 3yrs old, the other not quite 1yr yet).

I get a buzz mainly from the cost saving which goes directly into providing for my family.

I also enjoy travelling to Glasgow (via all the backroads) to go to the gym trying to see how close to the 'perfect' time I can achieve - believe me, its not about how fast I can go, its avoiding slowing down too much.

I've had a couple of spills caused by oil on the road, but thankfully, because I retro-fitted a stout crash bar, all I walked away with was a bit of embarassment, and a lot more knowledge.

What the bike represents to me was the challenge that driving used to pose, constantly re-learning and re-evaluating your skills (such as they are), all at a cost which is also reminiscent of how affordable motoring used to be.

Never has my late Father's words rung more truly - when I passed my driving test he said "treat everyone else on the road as if they were a bl00dy idiot - you'll either be correct (and relieved) or wrong (you can apologise later)".

I am very, very careful.

This job should never be complete - the day I think I've done it all, is the day I resign.

Extra time granted for new motorcycle test

From the DSA website...

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) has announced a delay of six months to the introduction of the new practical motorcycle test, originally scheduled for September 29, 2008.

The move comes after the Agency considered representations from the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA), the Motorcycle Rider Training Association (MRTA) and other motorcycle interests.

The new implementation date will now be Monday, March 30, 2009.

The decision to defer implementation will allow the DSA to carry on delivering motorcycle tests from a wider range of centres whilst working with motorcycle groups and to find a suitable solution for providing the new test service in problem locations.

Driving Standards Agency chief executive Rosemary Thew said: “Increasing road safety for motorcyclists has always been a top priority and it remains so. We listened carefully to the concerns put to us and this deferment acknowledges those concerns.

“None of us has lost sight of the fact that the aim of the new motorcycle test is to improve road safety for this important group of road users. This extra six months will give additional opportunity to find extra locations that we need to deliver the new test and potentially address gaps in service provision which have been highlighted to us.”

Why do today what you can put off until tomorrow...
