Re: Should I buy a 2002 Grand Espace 2.2cdi? Are they reliable enough?
I currently have a Twingo 2 85dci 2009, a clio RS 182 2005 and a grand Espace 2l dci 2013 and I have had a clio 1.4RN & scenic 1 1998 previous to all that ***8230;***8230; I can say that the Renaults are pretty reliable (to my mind for the most part) ***8230;. nonetheless things can go wrong and the more gadgets you have, the more there is to go wrong. Generally the Espace is pretty loaded with gadgets plus the 2.2L diesel seems to have a mixed history .***8230; plus you are looking at a car that is 2002, for 14yrs and I would guess well over 100K miles. I also guess you're getting it cheap cheap ?? In which case you should have some back-up funds for the eventual bills.
One plus point is that there are LOADS of them and so getting cheap second hand spares, even a full engine should not be difficult ***8230;. check it's been fully serviced (cared for) and go of it ***8230;. they are nice to drive (for an MPV) ***8230;.
I have an opportunity to buy an Grand Espace, year 2002. 2.2dci Diesel. The Authentique version. I love the look of it as I love MPV's for their versatility. But on looking at Car Reviews online I am now pretty scared that it won't be reliable enough for me as there are all sorts of horror stories about the Espace and engine failures/problems. I have left a £100 deposit on this one and due to collect this Friday. Should I proceed or back out before I am plunged into huge repair bills which I can't afford. I have never had a Renault before, only had Skodas and Japanese cars. Advices would be most appreciated, it's too big a car to push very far! lol. Sam
