When the first mini was launched in 1959 it cost £500 which was the average yearly wage in the UK at the time. With the average yearly earnings now at around £25K it looks like the relative cost of buying a car has certainly come down considering £12,000 would buy a fairly good car now-a-days. £25,000 could buy you either a "C" class or maybe even an "E" class at the moment.

I would agree that in relative terms that the purchase price of a car v wages has reduced, but the actual costs in owning & running a car has increased without a doubt.

There is much more competition in shifting the metal (car supermarkets, parallel imports, pre-registered cars, cheap finance deals), than in any other area in motoring.
