I'd say most car crashes involve frontal impact of one level or another - the obvious exception being hit from behind. A hit from the side would be the same whether you are facing forward or backwards (assuming you are strapped in).

I've always tried to avoid the side seats on buses. Even under braking they are hard to stay on - and rather dangerous I think.

Still as long as the driver, be it a car, a bus, a taxi or a plane, is facing forwards then I feel a lot safer!!!

I always remain seated and facing forward while driving It seems to have served me well over the years
