Personally I don't think manufacturers want to charge us for repairs at all - they just want us to buy a new car keep it for its warranty period and then buy another one. The way repair costs are going it may actually prove cheaper. My neighbours bought one of those far eastern made cars (Hyundai or something) - it has a 5 year warranty and he's intends to throw it in against another one as soon as the warranty expires.

Can't agree with you there Noel.

Manufacturers & dealers make far more from servicing & repairs than from the initial purchase.

Lets face it - everyone buys a car based on its price vs their budget. They may then refine their choice taking into consideration fuel economy, road tax bracket, servicing intervals, locality of dealer, projected resale value., finance package The factors they won't look at is the prices of spares or the dealer's labour rates. Therefore, because there is no focus on this, there is no comparison, and ultimately, no reason for competition.

The customer only finds out at the service point what they need to pay.

This job should never be complete - the day I think I've done it all, is the day I resign.

Yep I must agree with Paul here.

Used sales is a different matter.

Most dealers make about 40% of income from workshop and part's sales, 40% from the used forecourt sales and 20% from new cars sales .

Finance and warranty's also bring in an considerable income, Which is greater on used sales over new car sales as these can carry packages that are financed by the manufacturer
