I've heard that's still not a very safe option, though I may have been misinformed?

It is essential an airbag be disabled if a child seat is used in the front passenger seat otherwise it can cause fatal injuries to babies and young children if activated. Air bags are primarily designed to suit adults but a small child cannot absorb the impact of an inflating airbag.

the reason for putting a child on the back seat is its further away from a head on and if the seat is not the center seat they're also shielded by the seat in front of them from broken glass etc. Of course how true this is I don't know since it means f all for side impact and rear ends. And if you get hit by a truck or suv again it'll go straight through with the chassis about head height. So all in all, it should be fine to put them on the front - just turn off the airbag.
