MOT - will I fail because of this?

Some scally knocked my wing mirror off and I havn't got round to getting and fitting a new one. The wing mirror and glass was undamaged, but the connection inside was snapped. The mirror still hangs on fine via the clip, and the cable for adjustment is still there so it stays put, but it's kinda lower than it should be. Would I fail my MOT for this? A slight knock will make it fall off (well, make it dangle, if you get me), so I wasn't sure about 'safety' issues. Oh its the nearside btw.

Anyone know? Cheers

Hi there.

As far as my limited knowledge would allow me, I don't think it will fail if the casing is intact and the glass remains intact within it.

If everything works, and its as you described above - I would get a PU adhesive called Tiger Seal (I've used this to reattach entire mirror casings to the door of cars I've worked on). Apply it sparingly and precisely and after around an hour, it will form a strong yet flexible bond.

You can purchase it for around £10.

Hope that helps - if you need any further info, please ask away.

Thanks for moving the thread, wasn't sure where it should go (don't use the forum too much). Thanks Vel and Tink for your replies.
That tiger seal sounds good, would I get that from a normal auto shop? Sounds like a cheaper alternative to getting a new mirror. Yes everything's intact and I guess if I can just glue it back on that'd be great. I did consider tape but I'm far too vain, even on an old clio! I'd rather leave it as it is (you can't tell there's a problem just by looking) or spend 27£ for a new mirror. If I can fix it for a tenner then that's the way forward! (credit crunch and all that lol)

Thanks guys

You won't find it in Halfords, but any motor factors or independent car accessory shop should be able to source it for you. Or flebay for that matter.

It fits onto a mastic gun, and both surfaces need to be clean & dry.

Its the same substance which is used to secure spoilers & bodykits - so a wing mirror isn't any bother. Just use some masking tape to hold it in place whilst the adhesive sets, and you'll be fine, trust me (done it many times).

Just try to use it sparingly - it can be quite messy - any residue can be removed with thinners on a soft cloth.

Best of luck with the repair & the MOT.

yea scrap yard was my initial thought, but the best one near me never has any clios in.... I've rang like a million times and I've pretty much given up on them! A brand new one isn't that expensive anyway (obv. not from renault though...) but I just wondered if I'd fail me MOT if I don't get it sorted in time...

right, thanks again vel. I've already spotted some on eBay but I'll try this little motor shop tommorrow (they're normally pretty good, and better than halfords). Ta dave....... in theory I can adjust it from the drivers seat.... just not got as much 'range' of sight ('cos the thing is slightly lower than should be). I guess I'll try and get it fixed before hand anyway, and then there'll be no issue. Thanks everyone for replies :)

Which side mirror is it?.

If it's the drivers side mirror, then it needs to be secure(which it doesn't sound like it is),have a mirror that provides a view to the rear of the vehicle(it can be cracked, but it must provide an adequate view),and mustn't have any sharp edges on it caused by damage to the casing.

If it's a passenger side mirror, then as long as you have a servicable drivers mirror and interior mirror, the passenger mirror isn't testable, apart from sharp edges.

There is nothing in the MOT that states the mirrors must be adjustable,so the fact that yours isn't won't effect things, although it does sound like it is insecure,so if it's the drivers side mirror it should fail.

Do you know,I read that post three or four times but couldn't see any mention of which side it was......Sorry.

As long as you have a servicable drivers mirror and interior centre mirror, you don't need a nearside mirror,so your car will pass OK even if you don't manage to repair it.:)

Good luck.:)

Good stuff, that's the spirit.:)

Just remember that preparation is everything, try to minimise spillage, and support the casing with masking tape (not gaffa/duct tape as this will mark the paint). The longer you can allow it to set, the more secure it will be.

All the best (it should be fine).
