Renault Clio 172 - Pre Purchase advice

I am thinking about getting a 2002 Clio 172.

Are there any problems? Are they reliable?

a 172 is likey to have been driven hard, Check tyre and brake condtions as they wont be cheap, But will give an indication to use.

Check Shut lines and floor pan.

Its more likely to have been in a prang then a dodgy engine

As with any "performance car" Take it for a Good htest drive, get in all the gears all rev ranges you can........

and remember........ It's a buyers market for now, and the medium term.

A good service history = a well loved car!

I think that the 172 is a pretty reliable car,but as Tigz says, they will have usually been driven very hard and there are plenty of bent ones that have been repaired out there. An HPI check (or similar) is a must, and for once I'd be tempted to buy one from a respectable dealer and get a decent warranty with it.Avoid cars that appear to be bargains (especially on eBay ),they will be cheap for a reason.Make sure the cambelts been changed on anything over 5 years old as it can be an expensive item to change properly, and check for any noises when the car is started from cold.Beware of any cars that have been warmed up before you arrive to view them, they maybe hiding something.

I must admit, the one I had a go in was hilarious fun, although I wouldn't want to live with one day in day out.I am getting old though.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
