Servicing Precautions....?

This vehicle I have is the first I have had with such an involved electronic environment to include air bags and though I am itching to get at the car to undertake some repairs or at least some fault finding, I find I am hesitant and I am hesitant through being wary of that active electronic environment.

Basically I wish to ask before starting to undo electrical connectors, nuts and bolts, but particularly electrical connectors are there any pre service essentials I should action before I start poking around?

As I will say it I am wary of those air bags and seatbelt pretensioners and even wary of the ECU in some ways as in with the ECU what damage I could do to it if I don't take what precautions are necessary to avoid damage, if there are any?

Should I just disconnect the battery before working on the vehicle and if so what should I expect on it's reconnection?

Re: Servicing Precautions....?

According to Mr Haynes, one should disconnect the battery to empty the Ashtray
Could cause more problems though, if not done in the right order. Car unlocked, drivers window OPEN, Keycard OUT, all doors SHUT, Bonnet OPEN. WAIT Five minutes.
Assuming you know how to reset the windows & have radio Code, Disconnect Negative cable.

Do jobs,

Reconnect, insert radio code, do windows.
Simples.

Don't forget to turn the sidelights on before reconnecting the battery. This saves electrical spikes getting to to the instrument cluster and frying it.
