Is a Laguna s2 as good as it looks?

I've just got a few questions to ask as I wish to 'convert' from a oldish mercedes to a Renault Laguna s2.

Is it possible to have a full cream leather/cloth interior

in the version of the car below?

(I don't like the other version)

And, How good is the climate control/aircon? Can you feel it in the back of the car?

There's no cream leather as far as I'm aware. Light grey is an option, and personally I think it brightens up the interior considerably over the standard black leather. IIRC, you'll only get full leather as standard on the Initiale and the GT. The Privilege (and, I think, the Dynamique) both get part leather seats.

The climate control isn't one of the car's best features. It doesn't have a min or max setting for starters, so you can't make it blow cold air if the car's interior is less than 16C. For some bizarre reason, it doesn't like you let you put the blower motor on at full speed when trying to defrost the windscreen with a cold engine. I've never figured that one out.

Presumably the two versions are the hatch and the Sport Tourer ('Estate' to the rest of us.) Originally, there was no Initiale spec Sport Tourer, but they sorted that out quite early on.

You really can't fault them for toys, though if you're going for an Initiale and the budget will stretch, then the Phase II (2005 facelift) model's navigation system wipes the floor with the Phase I's. It's 3D, has full Western European mapping on DVD (the original is UK and Ireland in detail + major routes of Europe only.) What's more, you get Bluetooth handsfree and a 6 disc MP3 changer all thrown in.

If you're contemplating diesel, then avoid all variants of the 1.9 litre engine, as it has some serious reliability issues. The 2.2 is considerably more robust, and the new 2 litre diesel (from late 2005) is probably the best buy of all.

'Olidish' Mercedeesesees are probably more reliable then most modern cars out there, but 'newish' Mercedes are pretty awful as are the dealers. The only way is up,although moving to a Renault is a gamble.

As Horatio says, avoid all 1.9dCi's.....the 2.2 is good but not great, the 1.8 petrol is slllloooowwww.....the 2 litre 16 valve with variable valve timing is OK(avoid the IDE at all costs....),the V6 is a peach but is expensive to run.I don't know anything about the 2 litre dCi,but if Horatio says their OK,then thats fine by me.

Remember,if it's too cheap is not a bargain,it's a problem. The Lag 2 fits into this catergory unfortunately, but if you buy carefully you'll be very pleased with one. There are good ones out there, you just need to know what to look for and what to avoid.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....

NOW Now Lag... the IDE isnt all that bad. Mine's approaching 100K and not a hint of the usual IDE troubles ! (touches wood and crosses himself). But I bought mine with 77K on the clock, so it may have had all its problems fixed ?

Yeah there are some forum owners who have had problems with the IDE engine, but not me. Mine must have been made on a Monday
