Laguna GT Coupe buying advice?

Hi all, new to the forums and never owned a Renault before. Always fancied a Clio Sport, as I am fond of hot hatches, but never made the jump.

A 2009 Laguna GT Coupe 2.0 dcti has come up for sale locally. 180bhp. I'd never seen this car before and it ticks all the boxes for me. It's not the tomtom version.

What kind of things should I be looking out for?

It has:

  • 11 months MOT
  • 41,000 miles
  • Service history every 5k miles at dealership but only up to 18k (should that be a warning sign?)
  • 3 previous owners
  • MOT history says it has only failed once in 9 years and that was on tyre tread depth. The interval between MOTs each year is only about 5k, so it seems it has hardly been driven. By comparison I do about 17k a year.

The dealer is asking £6000 for it. Seems like a bargain to me but I don't know much about Renaults. I've seen others on ebay with 130k on the clock going for about £3-£4000, so they seem to be holding good value. I know with this version of the Laguna that Renault put a lot of time and money into sorting the reliability issues.

But what about parts? Are they easy enough to come by? There's only a few hundred of these in the UK as far as I'm aware, and I can't find any kind of Laguna GT owners group.

Are there any common problems with these car to be aware of? What should I be checking for and asking the dealer?

Thanks in advance!

Engine parts are plentiful as it is based on same mechanics a the hatchback/estate only harder part might be if you require 2nd hand body panels ..Points to check are mainly electrics due to water ingress should the scuttle panel drains be blocked (check drains by pouring water below windscreen and should drain at wheelarch) so press every button ensuring everything works ...2dci is probably one of the best lumps Renault made ...timing chain good for 100k miles ignore sales patter that it last forever all moving parts are worn by friction

Once Bought, Having Had dealer service It, At their Cost, inc Fuel, Oil, Air & Aircon Filters too. Install a bottle of Injector Cleaner, then give it a 100 mile thrashing, pref on motorway 2000 revs or more for 20 mins + . It needs to get hot & do some work to clear it's throat (DPF mainly). Diesels DO NOT like dribbling around town. It needs to breathe.
I have the same engine, now on 153,000 (M9R).
Seriously you WILL notice the difference.

Oh Yeah, CHECK EVERYTHING Electrical.
Windows, Aircon, Heater fan on ALL Speeds, Electric mirrors, Both Keycards independantly. Especially if proximity type, Heated & auto seats if fitted.
And NO Dash Nags.
Let's start with everthing working. :grin2:
Check Passenger footwell for damp, if so.... RUN AWAY.
So many only register here AFTER buying a lemon, rather than before. :frown2: HTH

Thank you both for your replies. Very helpful.

I've read about the DPF and what concerns me in that regard is that it has only done on average 5k miles between each MOT. Am I justifiably concerned? How would I know from inspecting the car if the DPF was likely to be an issue?

Nothing is guaranteed but I've had a hell of a time with my current car burning through cash so I'd like to get at least a couple of years out of this one before I had to think about spending any serious money on it.

Anything else I should be checking for?

Thanks again.

You Wouldn't, unless the Emissions light was on.
Hence my advice regarding giving it an "Italian Tune up" after purchase.
May be that Lags don't have one, my 2010 Trafic doesn't.
Copied from another thread.
They never go wrong, no money in that engine...:|
Ball joints, rear brakes, only problems, but put that down to where we live.
Couple of factors sell cheap/nasty parts, and customers are only keeping the car for 6 months,, or so they say,
Trust Renault get one right...:grin2:
M9R 742, no dpf fitted, M9R 857 from 2013 no dpf fitted
All others have a dpf fitted, on the 2 litre DCI.:nerd:
But will have a nosy see if anything is showing...
They really are a good engine, if looked after..

Thanks. I think it does have one, as it says FAP, which I understand is DPF abbreviated in French!

Would 5k miles a year for the last 8 years concern you? And no service history for the last 22k?

Is £6k a good price for this car on 41k miles?

5K a year, depends on what trips it did. But you'll never know, whether South of France Twice or 300 trips to the shopping centre?
Use the lack of service history to reduce price.
None of my Cars / Bikes have service history, as I service them properly myself. :smile2:
Sounds like owned by a pensioner.
Not getting involved price wise. 5K Better. :grin2:
Another Thought, check for wear on the pedal rubbers, steering wheel, see if it matches the mileage claimed.

Plenty 2dci Lagunas out there low mileage ..mine was same (no DPF) son in law gave it a good service then I took it an 80 mile blast to caravan ran like a Swiss watch ...as said if you buy it get a service and then make sure you give it a good run blow the cobwebs

I went to see the car last night. It's even nicer in the flesh than in the pictures! Took it for a test drive for about 4 miles and it's really smooth. No knocking or rattling and it's very responsive. Checked all electrics and heating/aircon and they all seem to be working fine. Scuttle drains are clear.

Dealer says it has just been serviced, although just an oil/filter change as far as I'm aware.

There's a few interior things I can live with but are a bit annoying though. Door trim looks it has had a dog jumping/scratching at it (both driver and passenger side), the key card slot has a big mark around it (why would this be?). Also included a pic of pedals and steering wheel since a few users have said to check it matches the mileage (41k). Not sure whether or not it does to be honest.

One other thing - in the photos on their website, I noticed the orange spanner icon was lit on the dashboard. I thought this might just come on when the engine wasn't running? But maybe not. If so, does the suggest a previous fault that the dealer has now cleared? If it is then I'll want to query it.

Appreciate any advice before I decide to buy or not. Dealer is going to knock £200 off the asking price (£6k) and they give a 3 month warranty.

Thanks for reply. I thought air freshener too.

Any thoughts on why orange spanner on dash would be showing in pics?

Also curious why 3 prev owners have only driven it on average 5-6k miles a year each. Does that suggest really poor mpg?

What kind of mpg can I realistically expect? My commute is 24 mile return trip (dual carriage way) but every other weekend I drive a 300 mile round trip up to north of Scotland on single carriageway road.

Going from Lanark to Berwick upon tweed my 2dci 150bhp can give me between 48to53mpg about town 40mpg ...some folk have a coupe as a 2nd or weekend car ..

Thanks both for your replies.

Its the 180bhp I'm looking at.

6k might not be a lot for some but it is for me! So just trying to get as much info as poss. Likely to buy this weekend.

Current car has cost me a fortune in maintenance / repairs so I'm looking for something that will run at least 2/3 years without any significant unforeseen costs

The engine is a M9R ..one of the best engines about ...most Renault problems are due to poor maintenance and moisture so service regular and ensure you do an good clean of the scuttle drains ...Renault got the Laguna right but they were to late and were pushed out by the Insignia Mondeo and 3series and not one of them is as comfortable to drive
