new Espace 3.0 owner

Hi there

I'd just like to make my "Newbie" announcement as a proud owner of a 2000 Grand Espace 3.0 24v RXE. This site has so far proved invalauble in gaining knowledge of my new bus, as well as coming across horror stories that should have swayed my emotive purchase

I got the car as a good deal (800)( I think ), and it runs like a dream, and I just wondered if i could post several questions to other similar vehicle owners :

1. For a "religious" reason the original purchaser opted out of the radio and cd changer pack. The car is wired up to a fairly decent JVC cd player, but am having difficulty getting radio reception even tho the aerial is all wired in properly. Also the unit is situated on its side by the handbrake, has anyone wired up a better in car entertainment, and used the steering controls for it?

2. The car has done 172K, please don't ! recent gearbox and exhaust change and full dealer SH stamped to 160K. What areas should I look out for and replace asap?

I can't ascertain cambelt change because local dealer got sold, however may be able to dig deeper, local french car specialist quoted 700 on cambelt change but may get this cheaper.

3. I think I have left sunroof blinds extended for a couple of weeks, and they seem stuck to go back, is there anyway of getting their spring back?

4. Does anyone know where to get a parcel tray from?

5. Can i just change battery in spare key and expect this to work?

Everything works perfect, aircon, cruise, all electrics. I knew fuel econ would be tight, but most of my travelling is paid for by work. (is there anyway of improving it!! - -longshot)

Thanks for reading, and many thanks in advance for any kind responses

Hello and welcome to the forum.

I can't help on many questions in your posts as I am not an Espace expert, but I can tell you that 700 to have the belt changed is a very good price. As far as I know the engine has to be removed to changed it and the labour charge can be huge,so 700 is a bargain..If your in any doubt as to whether the belts been done and you plan to keep the car then I would bite the bullet and have it done.

The spare key may need reprogramming if the battery has been flat in it for any period of time,I'll have a look and see if this possible to or a Renault only job and get back to you.

Edit;My info on the keys is a bit hit and miss to be honest,so I'd try a new battery,if that doesn't work then get back to us and we'll try and give you some more specific info.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....

On an Avantime site a chap was mentioned who changes the 3l V6 cam belt with the engine in situ. Normally a belt change is 1500 and this chap does it for nearer 500 I think. He's done several Avantimes.

Hello axelson, 700 for a 3.0ltr belt change sounds quite good to me, make sure the also change all the other belts at the same time ... as I'm sure its an engine out job to get it done ... there may be shortcuts that the pros can take (maybe Lag's can comment) to do the job without the engine coming out ... but welcome to the darkside ... you will learn to both love and hate your Espace (usually within the same 60min's)

Hope it helps

Why is it the older I get .... the better I think I was ?
