Cats not to expensive non-gen 145+vat , its not unusual for them to fail on 1.6 8V engines, but sensor would be the 1st thing to check in my book.

Hello and welcome to the forums.
A lamda sensor is a very quick, easy and fairy cheap thing to replace (about 25 new from memory.)
I would change it as a matter of coarse.
Unfortunatly if that does'nt clear the problem then it could mean a new cat. Have you got a printout of the MOT readings? This could give a bigger clue.

Hope this helps Oilyrag
