Clio starter motor turns but engine will not fire?

While I'm on a bit of a roll on here tonight, I though i'd ask another question about a problem that we have experienced with our clio (1.2 Dynamique 2002). It went through a phase of not starting on the first turn of the key, it would take several attempts before it would start, on other days it would start first time (it did'nt matter if it was hot or cold), until one day after about 10 mins I gave up and called the AA out. After waiting for the AA for about 20 mins i thought i would give it another go, and suprise suprise it started first turn of the Key. Since then we have had no more problems and it starts first turn of the key every time. Does anyone now what might be the cause, is it likely to come back? The strange thing is it seems to have been worse when i used the car than the misses.

Sounds like the classic TDC sensor fault. These are a particular weak point and their replacement is well documented else where in the forum.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....

Question Sounds like immobiliser!

My Clio(1200) T reg was off the road for a couple of months and the battery went flat. Had the car 4 years. Nobody told me that when battery is removed (for charging) the immobiliser wont let you start car!
Had to have car towed to Renault Dealers in Edinburgh. Found several other Clios there with same problem.
As far as I know the keys have to be reprogrammed - costing 100-150 for a few minutes work. Local garage could programme other makes of car keys but not the Renault. Is this a rip-off?? Anyone else had this problem ? Ian
