The effect that thumping the dash seems to affect the dash it sounds like a duff connection somewhere. I don't know what the MOT test would have to do with it but Hey! stranger things have happened.

It may be prudent to check all fuses are clean and sound before going any further just in case one has become dislogded. It then may be wise to check out the electrical connections at the steering wheel as the problem seems not only to affect the trip meter but also the radio. The shake rattle and roll test performed by thy test equipment tends to make the steering wheel vibrate quite a lot.
