General Free / Cheap maintenance

We have a bunch of experts in this forum, so I thought I would ask the question, not simply because I am Scottish for those who instantly think it but because I am running fairly poor right about now, and this I think is something that would benefit all.

As I am sure every novice is aware, they drive along, hear some strange sounds, that maybe come and go, see things etc, and wonder how best to tackle either locating the issue, or clearing the noise out.

Im talking about thinkg like, rattle under car (like metal on metal rattle) whines from engine (I know they do but what is right and what signals a future problem), brakes stuck on (when you pull away there is a slight knock as they free themselves) and a host of similar little niggles.

Would it be possible for the experts among us to put together a list of common niggles that have simple solutions that cost little or no money (MacGuyver style if need be) with laymans terms explanations.

Here are my niggles.

1. Rattle under car, sounds like the silver metal part around the exhaust.
2. What level of whine sound should I hear from the engine, is it worse in cold than warm weather etc
3. What can be done to stop what seems to be either the wheel or brakes from sticking to the car when not used for a short time
4. Where the air box is located, it seems that the fitting is very loose so it vibrates when the engine is idling, sounds like a hole in the exhaust though its not

Thanks all.

1 - Possibly an exhaust heat shield. Should be easy to spot by shaking the exhaust etc. Could also be broken rear silencer box rubber mountings. There's sort of two parts to them - the outer "rubber ring", and the inner "solid rubber block". If they are hanging by the ring the exhaust will rattle (well it did on mine).
2 - Whining could be the beginning of turbo failure. Attend to this one ASAP because if the turbo goes then all the engine oil pours into the engine, the engine revs at maximum revs until it burns itself out and ends up scrap. You can't switch the engine off by the key so if you do get this happening do your best to stall the engine, even if it means burning the clutch out.
3 - I've often wondered this one myself and always put it down to partly worn or burnt brake discs partially sticking. It shouldn't do any harm. Try not putting the handbrake on quite so hard.
4 - The fitting is crap. Drill a hole through both parts and install a self tapper to hold them together.
