About to buy a Grand Scenic

Hi folks just about to take the plunge and change the wifes car from a Scenic 1 (00) to a Grand scenic.

Her current one is a 1.4 and we have been looking at the 1.5 & 1.9Dci's

Both of the ones we have seen have been on 05 plates. Both around the 30k mark.

The 1.5 is at a main dealer, and the 1.9 is at a home trader - not your normal 3 cars at a dodgy address type guy, but a large detached house in a private road with about a dozen cars there.

The 1.9 is a privilege and has the cooled centre console, multi changer and part leather seats. the 1.5 is more basic.

the 1.5 is 6999 with 35k the 1.9 is 6600 with 28k - both have full service history and the 1.9 will come with a brand new MOT and service.

I took the 1.9 out for a drive yesterday and noticed the following:

Service light on - needs a service - told that before I got in the car
Glow plug replace warning - again told before I started the car and that this would be done prior to purchase.

Car started fine, clutch bite felt ok Noticed wear mark by the start stop button (slight fading of the dashboard where people obviously miss the great big button!) and the top of the gear lever was fading - again we have seen this on many scenics - can you get a replacement?

Drove it a couple of miles, nice torque handle well, small plastic type creak from somewhere in the back.

Bodywork looks good, couple of marks on the back door inners where the seat belts have been shut in the door.

All in all looked ok.

Now, I am loathe to spend money on an inspection unless I really feel it is necessary, but as this is a small dealer I am not sure what to do. He has offered a warranty, but am thinking of taking out a 12 month warranty through CSMA (150quid) which covers everything but the CAT.

With a new MOT and my own warranty do you think this car would be a safe bet? Or should I go for the more expensive, less well specced one at the main dealer?

Both cars are motability - in fact this one still says class - disabled on the V5

I work at a car auctions and can tell you most main dealers buy their vehicles from us so there's no guarantee you are getting a better vehicle from them. A private trader is likely to buy from us and have lower overheads so that will reflect in the retail price. Both will valet them to within an inch of their life and give them a basic mechanical check. You may get a main dealer warranty but the price will reflect that. If you can get the 1.9 with a decent warranty (check if there's a claim limit etc) that still works out cheaper than the main dealer i'd go that route. Just make sure it does get a service and plugs prior to pick-up.

Gear lever inserts are easy to buy/fit, you see them on eBay all the time.
