Oh - and don't forget. The way to get the best out of 5ive-O's resident Feds is to accept the fact that yes; you might have been speeding...

Thanks for the reply.

And yes, if the speed limit was 30. I was indeed speeding!

Hi, Have a very careful read of this, if not all the rules were followed to the letter then you have a good case but the costs of going to court could be anything up to around £1500!

As Selwonk says, a copper with a handheld unit will usually stop you on the spot (or have a colleague further down the road waiting to do exactly that.) But there are handheld camera units these days, so it's not beyond the realms of possibility that they've snapped your pic to send you a NIP in the post.

If they're going to prosecute, then they have to notify the registered keeper within 14 days of the offence taking place. If a NIP arrives outside of that period, check the postmark. Sometimes they will chance it and send out a NIP well after the 14 day period has expired. If they do, then you have the pleasure of writing back and telling them what they can do with it (don't just ignore it.)

It's more of a worry if you have a leased car or were driving a rental car. The NIP may come through to the owners within 14 days, but they can take as long as they want to forward it to you. What's more, they tend not to give you the opportunity to challenge the ticket, and often add their own admin costs on top of the fine.

I got a speeding ticket through the post a few months ago and was shocked as it was my registration plate but I was no where near the place the incident took place.

I called the camera unit and they said that it was an officer with a hand held gun and the last letter of the plate was "smudged" so they sent out letters to all cars with the coresponding numbers and letter and see who owned up !!!!!!!!! I got a letter of apology but I was sick about it as I got it at night when I came home from work and could not call till 9am the next morning.

So you may get a letter through the post but fingers crossed you don't.

we have major road work up here just now on the way to work and there are 4 speed cameras on each side of the motorway taking an average ???? is it true that your speedy is set 3mph out ? Good luck Grynch108

You know you've spent too much time on the computer when you spill milk and the first thing you think is, 'edit, undo.'
