looking to buy..

hi there,i am looking to buy a clio around the 2002 age, gone are the days of my current 160bhp mg (rover) zr,blew the head gasket!! i am looking at the 1.4s just for the fact that they are cheap to run/tax/insure etc, have seen a few on places like autotrader which i like but am having trouble deciding on which spec to go for,are there any suggestions for me please? from what i can tell the privilege model has A/C over the dynamique,is that it mainly? i prefer the sporty look over the posher style, but i dont wanna go buy a car and regret not getting the higher model?? also is the 1.6 a better way to go,its a few insurance groups higher for what seems like not alot more power! help

HI Snyder... hope someone can help you further in regard to specs for Clios of that age. I went from a 54 Scenic Dynamique with ALL the bells and whistles on it, to a 1.2 Clio Expression..... and I dont regret it (apart from losing the space). Its a perky engine, 30mpg around town and a lot less bells and whistles to go wrong.

The ONLY thing I miss really, is the A/C, but mine has elec. windows and a sunroof.. soo can manage

Currently in Ginga's garage:
2002 (52) Renault Clio 1.2 16v 3dr Expression (CB05CF)

The 1.4s are very perky engines for their size, I love mine for what it is.

Spec wise, I went for Privilege as I'm a gadget-freak so it was the most packed one I could afford without going for the Initiale (which I couldn't insure) - How old are you? Having been able to insure an MG ZR 160 you may be able to insure a Clio 172/182 for similar money - these are powerful for Clios and can still come with extras like Aircon etc.

I wouldnt bother with the 1.6 - for the sake of ~10bhp it isn't worth it IMO. The 1.4 pulls very well, especially around 3k-4k (Peak torque) and will sit happily at 70-80 on the Motorway.

Consumption wise, I get about 28-36 round town dependant on outside temps and how I drive it. For a Manual you should probably get a few higher than what I get. On the Motorway, I had upto 45MPG so it can be quite frugal even with an Autobox.

Currently in tankface's garage:
2006 Black Magic Seat Leon Sport TDI DSG

thanks guys,im 23,i was insured for the year and thats over now and dont really want to insure again(it wasnt cheap),plus the car has cost me a fourtune over the last year in repairs, just after i got it,it started falling apart!would love a 2l sport 172 etc but for the next few years just looking for somthing a bit more eco friendly!also considering how much tax is goin up next year its time for a small engine again.i dont use a car as much as i used to so it makes sense to save a bit of money.clio seems like the wise choice for the size of car.have been looking on what seems like every single used cars sales website available and for some reason i can get a privilege cheaper than a dynamique without traveling up the country, so think i will be going for that.
cheers for the replys guys,snyder
