Its always good to have someone else there, as a witness to what's been said, plus an extra pair of eyes & ears can only be a good thing.
What I'd suggest as a good starting point is to test drive a new car, then you have a basis for comparison. The odd squeak or sound can be attributed to age/mileage, but anything else could be a major expense.
All the dashboard lights should illuminate on startup, then go out, things like that.
This job should never be complete - the day I think I've done it all, is the day I resign.
