It could be the phone that's the problem then. The 6230 has had numerous versions of firmware, and I believe some of the earlier ones had some serious problems with Bluetooth.
If you key *#0000# into the handset, it should give you a load of information, including the version number. Mine's on V 04.44, which seems to work well enough. If yours is an earlier version, then a firmware upgrade might well be in order. Your phone supplier should be able to point you in the right direction if this is required.
There's no way that the car can cause the phone to lose its signal (i.e. the bars on the phone's display.) If you're on V 04.44 or later and pairing to the car is causing the phone to lose signal, then I'd say that the handset is faulty.
