Renault Scenic 1 - Pre-Purchase Advice

Hi Guys, my scenic is about dead and I'm sick of putting money into it.

I have between 1500 and at a push 2000 to spend and have been scouring auti trader and ebay .

There seem to be so many models, some at ridiculous prices some seeming to good to be true. Ranging from r reg to 03, 40,000 miles to 140,000 in this price range.

I'm thinking of going for a 1.4 16v for the cheap tax and ins Any thoughts on this one?

What models do you recon I should look out for and which ones should I do a runner from, Also should I be looking for anything in particular when I go to view them.

I really want to stick with the scenic as mine has served me well and is a perfect family car for us.

I suspect the 1.4 is a little under powered and will be definately worked harder than your old 1.6 8 valve.Having said that,I suspect that reliability is more important to you than performance.

The 1.4 16 valve engine is pretty good to be honest, bar the infamous coil problems. These aren't expensive to buy any more and are an easy DIY fix,you just need to carry a spare one around with you!.I'd definately make sure the timing belt has been changed as per the service schedule,it's due every 72k or 5 years maximum.

I'd buy as late a car as you can, even if it means going for a lower spec'd one.Be very carefull what you buy on eBay though, you can definately get some bargains and pick up cars that are priced much lower than they should be,but there are some dogs on there at times.Always go and have a look at them before bidding/buying,never be tempted to buy a bargain that is miles away as it's a very big gamble to take.

Scenics don't hide their mileage very well, high milers are usually falling apart inside and usually getting a bit ropey both mechanically and bodily.Automatics are best avoided, the boxes are suspect and are expensive to fix, there are a number of other smaller niggles which can happen but I'm sure you've experienced most of them with your old one.

Hopefully other Scenic owners will offer you their thoughts too.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....

Cheers for the reply, It's not really performance I'm looking for........ anymore lol

I am going to look at a 2003 fidji, it has 86,000 on the clock and has just had a full service and timing belt change. All new tires brakes and pads, One owner.
Full spec with aircon and leccy windows front and rear, spot lamps and one of those nifty safari windows (Look fantastic but what are they for ) 6 Months tax and full m.o.t.

The guy used it for business and when he got a new car got it fully serviced for his wife but she wanted a smaller car and so they got a golf.

Slight scuff mark on the rear where they reversed into something, doesn't look major.

Just short of the 2k mark but I'm hoping to bring him down

Anybody own one of these??
