First time Renault buyer..

Soon I will be purchasing my first Renault, It will be my first car aswell, so I was thinking maybe a 2000 Renault Clio 1.2?

What should I look out for, bad point and good points.

Will this be cheap insurance?

Just throw information at me!

Insurance is good, not sure about rest apart from mind the bonnet catch (see the watchdog thread). On the whole though Clio's are good little runners.
Currently in chris m's garage:

Take the 1.2 16v over the 8v even if it does end up costing you a bit more for the car and a bit more to insure. There's a world of difference between the two 1.2 engines.

Insurance-wise, it cost us less to insure our 1.2 16v Clio fully comp when it was brand new than it did for TPF&T on the ten year old Orion 1.6i Ghia that we had before it.

Hi Josh.

The Renault Clio is a great first time car. Yes they are cheap to insure and are very economical. As you may have read elsewhere on the forum beware of the bonnet catches. Although IMHO the problem has been blown out of proportoin. As it will be your first car and I'm sure you can't wait to get it, please don't fall into the trap of buying the first car you look at just because "it looks nice". There are loads of cars around so look for a good one.
On a 2000 model, that you are hoping to get, a fairly up to date Renaut service history would be something to keep in mind.
Watch out for damp patches apearing around the interior light/central locking sensor. The aeriel that is mounted on the roof tends to let in water and it drips straight onto the sensor. If this packs up the car will leave you stranded. (quite easy to replace and about £60 to do)
TDC sensors quite often play up on all Renaults so it would be wise to ask the seller about whether they have suffered this problem. (not too hard to fix and relativley cheap). As are the coils the the HT leads plug into. (again easy and fairly cheap)
Make sure when you buy the car that you get the radio code.........
If you should ever need to change or disconnect a battery the radio won't work without it. Renault can supply the code but it does take time and they normally charge £10 + VAT for doing so. Hope this helps. Kind regards Oily.

Edit: Make sure the cambelt has been changed. Even if you buy a low milage car it should have been changed after 5 years. (Or 72,000 miles)
