Question Am I doing the right thing?!!

Hi All,

Tomorrow evening, I pick up my new car from a car supermarket in Maidstone.

It is a Laguna Estate 2.2DCI Dynamique, first registered June 2004 with 22,500 miles on the clock.

However, it must be an older build as it doesn't have standard climate and cruise control (which I believe from my research on the model should have been fitted from Jan 2003).

I have read lots of mixed reviews about this car over the last couple of days and I am starting to get a little worried about the purchase!!!

The vendor has noted that the rear bushes are worn and are kindly going to pay a Renault dealer to replace these for me, and at the same time apparently there was an outstanding recall for some reprogramming!

The car has full renault warranty until June 2007 as it is not an import, although I have been told that this doesn''t cover too much. Is it worth me taking out a second aftermarket warranty!

Anything to put my mind at rest greatly appreciated!

There were some issues with the DCi engine I think, check the Laguna knowledge base for more info, and an aftermarket warrenty sounds like a good idea. The Lag is on the whole a good car though. Also check the threads regarding oil type and service intervals as the Renault recommended intervals appear, by common opinion to be too long.

I don't know what's supposed to be wrong with the full three year warranty. As far as I'm aware, it covers just about anything apart from bona-fide consumables. I believe the only restriction is mileage related in the third year, and as your car is well below the 60K threshold, that shouldn't be a problem.

I should be on commission for this by now, but the Renault Harmony warranty is probably the best (though not the cheapest) way to extend this beyond the three years. Prices vary depending on mileage and the number of years you want to extend it by, but it gives close to the same cover as the original manufacturer's warranty, and could pay for itself several times over if the car needs a single major repair (e.g. turbo replacement.)

Cruise may have come as standard with some of the auto box variants, but I think the only phase 1 manuals to get it as standard were the Initiales. I know you get cruise on most (all?) of the 'Elegance' range now, but I think that only came in with the phase 2.

We had a 52 plate Privilege 2.0 VVT on the fleet until recently, and that didn't have cruise control. It had climate, but then the Privileges always have had.

The dynamique spec had manual air conditioning as standard - unless the "comfort pack" was specified as an option. This gave you climate control and a sunroof. Not sure about cruise tho, think that came with 2004 models. There was a minor facelift to Lagunas in March 2004, If you have a 2004 model you should also have rain sensitive wipers ( but not auto lights). If you haven't then chances are it is a 2003 model. Our lag was also registered June 2004 and IS a 2004 model as it has latest seat trim/dash material & "auto lights". It was built in Feb2004 as far as I can tell as various stickers on under seat wiring, under bonnet etc have dates of feb2004 on.

If you have got full Renault warranty then don't bother with another aftermarket one. The Renault warranty will be ok.
There were issues with 1.9dci engines in particular, with less faults reported on the 2.2dci. It basically came down to 18k being too long inbetween services.
Use fully synthetic oil (5w40) every 9000 miles and you shouldn't have too many problems.
A lot of the problems with the Laguna II were also with earlier models ( 2001/2002) and issues with tyre pressure sensors and turbosin particular seem to have been ironed out.

You have made a good decision, just enjoy your car. All cars, no matter what make or model will go wrong at some point. Try not to worry about it, enjoy your new car, knowing you have a warranty as peace of mind!
