Will I be a Renault Espace Owner? Some q's

Hi all - I've been a Renault owner in the past and had a positive experience so am considering taking the plunge again.

I'm after a big MPV that can fit bikes in the back so am looking at a Grand Espace. Have seen some Privilege spec 2.2 DCi models for around the 17K mark on an 04 car which seems a reasonable price to me and I'm likely to buy one of these unless I get warned off.

Hopefully someone out there can give me some advice:

1) One dealer I spoke to (independent) said that in 05 there were some handling mods to the Grand Espace that made a big improvement in handling and ride. Is this true? - I can't see any info about this. An 05 car is going to cost me an extra 2-3K so would rather get the 04 that I've seen if there is no major difference.

2) Fuel economy - what do people get out of their 2.2 dci cars on a mainly motorway journey with 2-4 people on board?

3) Buying tips - are there any particular things to look out for with this car when viewing? I'll of course be checking the usual = service history, VIN, etc. But any common faults would be good to know about.

Thanks for any info or other advice - Am looking forward to all the new toys in the car to play with!

If your looking at 04 plate Espaces, the best advice I can give is seriously consider an extended Renault warranty(their called 'Harmony' I think). This will keep the car covered after the 3 year warranty runs out(subject to the usual terms and conditions!).

The main worry with DCi's is turbo failures, although it does seem to be the 1.9 that is affected worse than the 2.2.If you do buy one, have the oil and filter changed more regularly than Renault suggest. The extended service intervals (upto 18,000 miles for some DCi's) are the prime suspect when it comes to premature turbo failure.

Apart from that, the Espace is a great car,and if you get a good one you'll be more than pleased with it.As with any second hand car purchase, there are always risks, but buy carefully and get as much advice as you can,and you can minimise these risks considerably.

Sorry I can't be more specific in answering your other questions, but there are quite a few Espace owners on the forum that will no doubt add to my comments.

Good Luck.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....

Welcome to the Forum Adam!

I've got a 53 Plate (December 2003) Grand Priv 2.0T (Petrol, couldn't bring my self to buy an Oil Burner, but I may do next time after seeing how much this baby drinks)

I'm with Lag about the warranty - I wouldn't risk running one without. I bought mine when it was 8 months old so I've had the benefit of a couple of things being sorted on warranty. Later this year I'll either trade it or buy the Harmony warranty.

Don't know about them changing in 2005 but there's nothing wrong with the handling - they are a great car!

Any specific questions, just ask!

I'm also looking for an Espace, but reading the forum has put me off the 2.2 - too many turbo failures. I'm not sure whether the 3.0 is similarly affected.
