Renault Clio 2 - Buying Advice

Heloooooo Renault forum, i'm looking at buying a 1.4 3dr clio and wanted to know if there was anything in particular i should look out for (rust electronics, engine etc...)

there a a few problems the guy selling has informed me about

the wheel bearing - one of the front wheel bearings is in need of replacing (i've contacted a local company and they said that will cost around 130 to fix)

flat tyre - one of the tyres has a puncture so its running on the spare (not something i'm going to worry about too much)

rear wiper missing - the rear wiper is... well missing i'm assuming its just the exterior component and the rest is there and the guy said that this would be about (18) for the new part and i think thats the sort of this i can fix myself

the cars done 86 ish thousand miles and i think it has a service history (forgot to ask him but should be looking at the car tomorrow/saturday)

bodywork looks good from pics but i'll have a closer look when i see it

this looks to me like a good car but if anybody knows of any problem areas could you let me know.

Hello Nick and welcome to the forum.

Make sure the bonnet safety catch is in good working order, and if you do buy the car, religiously check it and lubricate it (search for 'watchdog' on the forum and you should find the thread all about the problem).

Make sure the cambelt has been changed.

If it's a 16 valve engine, then they suffer from pencil coil failures but this is an easy DIY fix and isn't expensive if you use aftermarket parts.

If it's got a sunroof, they can rattle and leak.Again, there are threads on the forum covering this with details on how to fix it.

Wheel bearings are a common failure, but again these needn't be expensive and aftermarket parts seem to last well once replaced.

If it's got electronic power steering, check it's function as problems can be expensive to fix.

The front wings are plastic, these can crack, especially along the top edge so check them carefully.

Thats all that springs to mind for now,I'm sure other members will add their thoughts too.I know the above faults make it sound like the Clio is a bad car,but in all honesty they are generally very good and if you buy carefully then you should have a good, reliable car.Even if you do have problems, there is a mass of info on here to help out.

EDIT;Something else() is check the coil springs as they can snap.

Thats it now....honest.

If it's a 1.2 16v, check the condition of the wires near the ECU (the small, black, metal box at the back of the engine near the windscreen mounting). The metal box protecting the ECU has a tendancy to work loose and can cut through the wires causing no end of problems!
