Re: Renault Vel Satis - Buying Advice

Welcome to a somewhat exclusive 'club' hopefully your experience with your VS wil be a rewarding one. Only time will tell. I bought mine in July '07, having seen 'it' and the Avantime when they were first launched and being impressed by both. At the time there was no way I could afford the £30+K price tag. Then back in 2007 we needed to replace my wife's company car and we were about to buy the Seat Toledo – which I think due to poor sales is now discontinued – when my wife said "Doesn't that look like that Renault we saw a few years back?"
A quick check and sure enough they had lost loads of money, so we found one. It's reasonably economical for its size and I'm not doing a high annual mileage anyway, but it really comes into its own when cruising down to the South of France. With acres of room for those in the rear. And if you are in a hurry it will eat up the Motorway kilometers with ease, although its not suited to a lot of throwing around.
Touch wood my problems have not been to serious/expensive to rectify and fortunately my local Renault dealer knows about them as one of their directors had one. I think a large percentage of VS sales were to Renault dealers!
I too had some condensation in the headlamp. Try removing the unit (you can only basically slide the unit forward) and remove the back cover enough to blow some warm air (from hairdryer) into it. Problem gone. You might find useful the VS Workshop repair manual (on disc), from fingerprintuk on ebay for £4.99 inc P&P.

Re: Renault Vel Satis - Buying Advice

Yes Tony, the Toledo was a total rip-off the Vel Satis and failed miserably! Your hairdryer method sounds good... I shall be trying it very soon as the condensation has not got any better at all!

Paul, you're like a human haynes manual, only better! I will be using your step by step guide as soon as I work out the paint code! I checked the sticker, and nothing looks anything like a paint code... Here's what's on the sticker, anything stand out for you?

An update:
Life so far with the Vel is going very well. We've decided to call her "Velerie".
Had quite a few comments already, and she gets looked at more than I expected!
I was driving along today and suddenly the display turned orange and said "SERVICE". You can guess what was running through my head. But before I knew it, the voice synthesizer announced "Number Plate Illumination Faulty". I don't think I've ever been so relieved in my life!
Another thing - The headlight washers are only coming out half way, and not spraying, they seem pretty sticky and I'm reluctant to go painting one for it to then need replaced!

Thanks again for the shared advice and experiences - Tony: I plan to take Velerie to the South of France very soon, I like your style!

Re: Renault Vel Satis - Buying Advice

Thanks for the plate info - its the TE(A19) part which is relevant. The A19 is a colour called Beige Angora Effect - a metallic golden sand colour. The TE part just stands for Teinte Effect (in other words, a lacquered finish).

That's a nice bright colour for an already distinctive car - shrinking violets need not apply.

I include a few pics of mine when I had only just bought it.

Best of luck,

You won't believe this but i have a new set of washers in the cupboard that i never got around to fitting. PM me if you need them, they should be £85+ vat for a set but i can let you have them a lot cheaper than that.
(also a new set of Renault OE wiper blades that cost silly money)

Re: Renault Vel Satis - Buying Advice

Just picked up on this thread and well done to the OP for buying the VS!

If you've not got a sat nav disc yet, I'm fairly sure the official Navteq CD is your best bet, as I tried loads, some which worked and some which didn't, but the Navteq official CD worked fine in the end. It's the CNI1 (Carminat Navigation Informee 1) version, for slightly older VS models (pre-2005).

Kind Regards,
