If so how does one get into it?
As far as I can tell its a matter of getting a van, some insurance, advertising, and plenty of moolah in the bank for diesel and a decent mobile contract. Then cross your fingers! Loads of people start up and drop out of this game every year. In terms of small enterprise transport is one of the worse areas in which to set up as it's so competitive.
I don't actually work for myself, although I'm tempted. I get a decent cut of silly long jobs like today's, I usually do 2-5 high mile trips a month. Mileage wise probably about 58K a year, maybe more. The cost of van/fuel/insurance/etc etc is frightening though which put me off. I work in a small company though and have responsibility for making sure the van is working properly. Since its not my wallet the thing goes to the dealers
