I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned tyre pressures. Keeping these correct will save you fuel. Also avoid carrying unnecessary junk around in the car. Extra payload is extra mass, which requires extra fuel to accelerate.
Avoid using the car for short journeys, as that's when it's at its least economical. It's also when it's at its most harmful to the environment, as the catalytic converter doesn't work until the exhaust warms up.
Braking doesn't use fuel, but it does waste energy that came from fuel. Your engine converts fuel into kinetic energy, and your brakes convert kinetic energy into heat (which just dissipates into the atmosphere.)
